Playing the Game
Rites of Passage is a text-based multiplayer roleplaying game (MUD). You explore a persistent world described in rich prose, interact with other players and creatures, and advance your character through combat, questing, and exploration — all through typed commands.
Rooms & Descriptions
The world is divided into rooms. Each room has a descriptive name and a detailed paragraph you see when you enter. Rooms list visible exits — the directions you can travel — as well as any players, creatures, or objects present.
Command Entry
Type a command and press Enter. Commands are case-insensitive. A command typically consists of a verb followed by arguments:
look — examine your surroundingsattack goblin — attack a creature named goblinget sword — pick up a sword from the room
If you are new to MUDs, we strongly recommend reading the Getting Started guide first — it covers account creation, connecting, and your very first minutes inside the realm.
Movement & Exploration
Movement uses the cardinal and ordinal compass directions. You may type the full direction name or its abbreviation:
Examining Your Surroundings
look (or just l)
displays your current room description, visible exits, and everything
present in the room. Use it constantly — it is your eyes in a text world.
You can also look <target> to examine
a specific person, creature, or object in the room.
Entering and Leaving
Some exits are doors or portals rather than open passages. Where
applicable, use enter or
simply type the exit name to go through.
Character Information
Rites of Passage provides several commands to inspect your character and the world around you. These are your most-used commands.
Score / Info
score (alias:
info) displays your full
character sheet:
- Name, level, race, profession, and faction
- HP, Mana, and Stamina bars
- Current XP and XP required to reach the next level
- Base stats: STR, INT, WIS, DEX, CON
- Current character state (standing, resting, meditating, combat, dead)
- Currency balance
- Number of skills unlocked and active quests
- Guild and sect affiliations
- PvP statistics: war points, kills, and deaths
Inventory
inventory (aliases:
inv, i)
lists every item you are carrying along with its quantity.
Equipment
equipment (alias:
eq)
shows what you currently have equipped in each of your fifteen
equipment slots.
Who
who displays a table of every
character currently online, showing their name, level, race,
profession, faction, guild, and sect. Players are sorted by
level, highest first.
Communication
Rites of Passage offers several ways to communicate with other players, from room-wide speech to private whispers.
Speaking
say <message> speaks to
everyone in the same room. Your message is visible to all other
characters present.
Private Messages
tell <player> <message>
sends a private message to a specific player anywhere in the game.
You may also use page as an
alternative.
whisper <player> <message>
sends a private message to someone in the same room.
Social Emotes
social <action> [target]
(alias: emote) performs a
visible emote, optionally directed at another character.
Currently available socials:
wave and
bow.
social bow — bow gracefullysocial wave at Kaelen — wave at another player
Ignore
If a player on your ignore list is the target of your social, they will not see it, but you and the rest of the room will.
Combat
Combat in Rites of Passage is room-based. You attack targets in the same room using your equipped weapon and base stats. Combat is turn-based with 5-second rounds.
Starting Combat
attack <target> (alias:
kill) initiates combat against
a target in your current room. Both you and the target enter a
combat state.
attack goblin — engage the nearest goblin
Hit & Miss
Each attack has a base 75% chance to hit, modified by your stats and equipment. A successful hit deals damage based on your weapon's base damage plus your strength modifier, reduced by the target's total armour value.
Weapon Damage
Damage is determined by the weapon in your main hand. If you are unarmed, you deal a reduced base amount. Different weapons deal different damage types — piercing, slashing, concussion, or whipping.
Using Skills in Combat
use <skill> [on <target>]
(alias: cast) activates a skill
or spell. Skills may cost Mana or Stamina and can deal damage, heal,
or apply other effects. See
Skills & Spells below for details.
Combat State
While in combat, your character state changes to
combating. This state appears in your
score display. You cannot
rest or meditate while in combat.
Equipment & Items
Everything you carry or wear is managed through your inventory and equipment. Items are persistent and travel with your character across sessions.
Inventory Management
inventory (aliases:
inv, i)
lists all items you own. Stackable items such as potions display
a quantity count.
Equipment Slots
Rites of Passage features fifteen equipment slots:
Equipping and Unequipping
equip <item> [slot]
(aliases: wear,
wield) equips an item from
your inventory to the appropriate slot. If you omit the slot,
the game attempts to auto-detect it.
unequip <item> (alias:
remove) removes an item from
its equipment slot and returns it to your inventory.
Equipment Slot Aliases
When specifying a slot manually, you may use these shorthands:
mainhand or main_hand —
offhand or off_hand — ring1 —
ring2 — ear1 — ear2
Item Categories
Picking Up and Dropping
get <item> picks up an
item from the room into your inventory.
drop <item> removes it
from your inventory and places it on the ground.
Giving Items
give <item> to <player>
transfers an item from your inventory to another player in the
same room.
Skills & Spells
Skills and spells are the core of your character's combat and utility capabilities. They are unlocked automatically as you level up — no trainers, no quests required.
Viewing Your Skills
Your score display shows
how many skills you have unlocked. Each profession receives a
unique progression of skills as they advance.
Using a Skill
use <skill> [on <target>]
(alias: cast) activates a skill.
use bash on goblin — a stamina-based attackcast fireball on skeleton — a mana-based spellcast heal_critical — a self-targeting spell
Resource Costs
Skills consume either Mana or
Stamina. Some skills have no cost. The amount
required varies by skill. Your score
display shows your current resource pools so you can plan ahead.
Targeting
Some skills require a target (an enemy to damage), others are self-only (buffs, healing), and some have no target at all. The skill will tell you if it requires a target when you attempt to use it without one.
Skill Categories
Passive Skills
Some skills are passive — they provide a
permanent benefit and cannot be activated with
use. They are automatically
applied as soon as you unlock them.
Profession Skill Lists
Each of the ten professions receives different skills at different levels. For a complete list, see the Professions page.
Races & Professions
Races
Your race is chosen during character creation and is permanent. Race determines two critical things:
- Your faction — Valorian or Mordrath. Faction governs PvP alignment and is never chosen independently.
- Your base stats and stat limits — each race has a unique distribution of STR, INT, WIS, DEX, and CON, as well as racial traits and resistances.
There are 24 races (12 Valorian, 12 Mordrath). Explore the full compendium on the Races page.
Professions
Your profession is also permanent. It determines:
- Which skills and spells you unlock at each level
- Your resource gains per level (HP, Mana, Stamina)
- Your primary stat for mana calculation (Intelligence or Wisdom)
- Your core playstyle — melee, caster, hybrid, or specialist
There are 10 professions: Mage, Warlock, Warrior, Cleric, Thief, Templar, Monk, Alchemist, Ninja, and Druid. Full details on the Professions page.
Factions & PvP
The Two Factions
The realm is divided between two great powers:
Valorian
The alliance of free peoples. Twelve races united under a common banner.
Mordrath
The dark dominion. Twelve races bound to shadow and ambition.
Faction Rules
- Your faction is determined entirely by your race.
- You cannot change faction after character creation.
- Your faction is displayed on your
scoresheet.
PvP System
Player-versus-player combat is governed by zone-based rules. There is no PvP toggle — whether you can fight another player depends entirely on your location.
| Zone Type | PvP Rules |
|---|---|
| Safe | No PvP of any kind. You cannot attack or be attacked by other players. |
| Contested | Opposing-faction players may fight each other. Same-faction combat is never allowed. |
PvP Statistics
pvp displays your PvP record:
War Points (earned per valid PvP kill),
PvP Kills, and PvP Deaths.
Progression
Experience Points (XP)
You gain XP by defeating enemies and completing quests. XP is
displayed on your score sheet
along with the amount required to reach your next level.
Levels (1–100)
Rites of Passage supports progression from Level 1 to Level 100. Leveling is automatic — there are no trainers to visit. When your XP reaches the threshold for the next level, you advance immediately.
What Happens on Level-Up
Each time you gain a level:
- Your maximum HP, Mana, and Stamina increase (amount varies by profession)
- New skills and spells are automatically unlocked based on your profession's progression table
- Weapon proficiencies are initialised for any new weapon skills
Level Scaling
Early levels come quickly. As you climb higher, each level requires progressively more XP. The curve is designed so that reaching the maximum level of 100 is a long-term achievement.
Death and XP
Dying costs a percentage of your progress toward your next level, but you can never lose a level. See Death & Recovery for the full details.
Quests
Quests provide structured objectives with XP and item rewards.
Manage them through the quest
command.
Quest Command
quest (alias:
quests) is your quest journal.
Quest Types
Quests in Rites of Passage feature two objective types:
- Kill objectives — defeat a specific number of a particular creature
- Collect objectives — gather a specific number of a particular item
Rewards
Completing a quest awards XP and often grants items directly into your inventory. Some quests have level requirements or prerequisite quests that must be completed first.
Economy & Shops
Currency
The realm trades in coins. Currency is stored internally as copper pieces and displayed in the most readable denomination:
currency (aliases:
money,
gold) displays your current
balance. Your currency also appears on your
score sheet.
Shops
Shops are persistent vendors where you can buy and sell items.
shop lists all known shops.
shop <name> browses a
specific shop's inventory, showing buy prices, sell prices, and
stock levels.
Buying
buy <item> from <shop>
purchases one unit. Add a quantity:
buy 3 health_potion from general_store.
Selling
sell <item> to <shop>
sells one unit from your inventory.
sell 5 wooden_plank to blacksmith
sells a stack.
Known Shops
Death & Recovery
Death is a setback, not the end. When your HP reaches zero, your character dies and enters the dead state.
What Happens When You Die
- Your character state changes to DEAD
- Regeneration stops — dead characters do not recover HP, Mana, or Stamina
- You cannot attack, use skills, buy, or sell
XP Penalty
Dying incurs an XP penalty equal to 5% of your progress toward the next level. This penalty is clamped so that you cannot lose a level — you will never drop below your current level's XP threshold.
Respawning
When you respawn, you are restored to a designated respawn point (typically your faction's starting town or tutorial area). Your resources are restored to 50% of maximum:
- HP restored to 50% of max
- Mana restored to 50% of max
- Stamina restored to 50% of max
Your inventory, equipment, currency, skills, and quest progress all persist through death.
PvP Deaths
When killed by another player in valid PvP, the killer earns
a war point and a PvP kill credit. The victim's PvP death count
increases. These statistics are visible via the
pvp command and on your
score sheet.
Guilds & Sects
Characters may join one guild and one
sect. These are separate affiliations that
appear on your score sheet
and in the who listing.
Guilds
guild manages your guild
membership.
Available guilds: Mercenaries Guild, Merchants Guild, Adventurers Guild, Shadow Syndicate.
Sects
sect manages your sect
membership with the same syntax.
Available sects: Order of Light, Keepers of the Flame, House of Shadow, Crimson Circle.
