New to Rites of Passage — or to MUDs entirely? This guide walks you through every step, from registering an account to understanding your first moments inside the realm. Follow each section in order and you will be ready to begin your journey.
Create Your Account
An account is your persistent identity. It stores your character, settings, and progress across every session. You will use it to log in each time you return.
- Choose a unique username.
- Provide your email address.
- Set a strong password.
- No email verification is required — you can register and play immediately.
After registering you will be taken to your Dashboard, where you can create your character. Returning players should use the Log In link instead.
Create Your Character
Every account holds exactly one character. Your character is your avatar in the world — their name, race, and profession are permanent choices that define your entire journey.
- From your Dashboard, select Create Character to begin the character-creation wizard.
- Choose a character name. This is permanent and cannot be changed later.
- Select a race. Your race grants unique traits and determines your faction allegiance — Valorian or Mordrath. You do not choose a faction separately.
- Select a profession. Your profession determines your combat role and skill progression.
- Review your rolled base stats. You may reroll up to 3 times before locking in your final numbers.
- Confirm your choices on the final review screen. Once confirmed, these decisions are permanent.
Enter the Realm
Rites of Passage is played directly through your browser — no downloads, no installers. Once your character is created, you can connect to the game world immediately.
Understanding a MUD
Rites of Passage is a MUD — a Multi-User Dungeon. If you have never played one before, here is what you need to know.
The game is text-driven. Instead of clicking on things, you interact with the world by typing commands into a prompt and pressing Enter. The server responds with text describing what happens.
When you first connect, you will see:
- A room name — where you are standing right now.
- A room description — prose that sets the scene.
- Visible characters, creatures, and objects — anything else present in the room.
- Exits — directions you can travel (north, south, etc.).
- A command prompt — where you type.
Think of it as a living novel that you control. Every action you take is a sentence you type, and the world writes back.
