Getting Started
New to Rites of Passage? This guide will walk you through everything you need to begin your journey into the realm.
Step 1: Understand What ROP Is
Rites of Passage is a text-based MUD — a multiplayer fantasy world you experience through text. You read descriptions and type commands. No graphics, no mouse. Just your imagination and the written word.
It's like reading a novel where you are the main character — except thousands of other players share the world with you, and the story never ends.
Step 2: Choose Your Race
ROP has 24 unique races divided into two alignments: Good and Evil. There is no neutral alignment — you must choose a side.
Your race determines:
- Your starting stats (STR, DEX, CON, INT, WIS, CHA)
- Your unique passive ability
- Your starting city: Aethelgard (Good) or Gorgoroth (Evil)
- Your faction allegiance
Step 3: Choose Your Profession
ROP has 10 playable professions. Your profession determines:
- Your combat role (tank, damage, healer, support, hybrid)
- Your HP and Mana progression per level
- Available spells and skills
- Armor and weapon proficiencies
- Stats gained on level-up
All 10 professions are available to all 24 races. There are no race/class restrictions.
Step 4: Create Your Account
When you connect to ROP, you'll be guided through account creation:
- Choose a username and password for your account.
- Create your first character — pick a name, race, and profession.
- You'll appear in your faction's starting city, ready to begin.
Your account can hold multiple characters so you can explore different combinations.
Step 5: Learn the Basics
Start in your city. Read the room descriptions. Use look to see everything around you. Type help at any time for in-game assistance.

Alignment: Good vs. Evil
In ROP, there are two factions and no neutral ground:
Good — Aethelgard Alliance
Good players start in Aethelgard, the Shrine of Light. They fight for honor, justice, and the protection of the realm.
Evil — Gorgoroth Horde
Evil players start in Gorgoroth, the Dark Temple. Power is taken by those strong enough to seize it.
